Boat Insurance Requirements

If you plan on mooring your boat at a marina, you will be required to show proof of insurance. However, Washington state does not require boat owners to obtain insurance. It is still necessary and highly recommended. Marinas require proof of insurance since you can face a potential loss since boats sit close to one another. All it takes is one incident such as a fire to spread to other boats including the dock itself. Usually, marinas require proof of at least $500,000 in liability coverage prior to allowing you to rent a space to moor your watercraft.

Coverage Options

Insurance policies can include any of the following options:

Property damage coverage- This will protect your boat and your marine equipment which includes furnishings, machinery, and any equipment that is permanently attached.
Medical expenses- This will cover the cost of expenses if you or your passengers are injured due to a boating accident.
Liability- This will protect you if you are involved with another boat, a swimmer, or even get into an accident with the dock.
Loss of your boat or watercraft that is a result of fire, theft, or others.
Personal effects coverage- This protects your personal items that you bring on your boat such as cameras, clothing, and cell phones.
Fuel spill and wreckage removal
Emergency assistance- Towing assistance is available as is the delivery of gas.
